GPRTU to Crack Down on Fare Exploitation as Commuter Complaints Rise

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced a major clampdown on commercial drivers who charge unfair and inflated fares, especially during peak hours in Accra.

The enforcement exercise is set to begin Monday, January 19, 2026, with the Union deploying task force personnel to identified transport hotspots where commuters have repeatedly complained of exploitation.

Speaking to Citi News on Sunday, January 18, the General Secretary of the GPRTU, Godfred Abulbire, said drivers caught overcharging passengers will face strict sanctions. These include loading bans and, in extreme cases, termination of union membership.

“What the drivers fear most is banning them from loading. We have our own task force to ensure they can’t operate. From Monday, we will deploy our teams to vantage points where these exploitations occur to verify whether the vehicles involved belong to the union,” he explained.

To strengthen enforcement, the Union also plans to roll out a vehicle branding system, making it easier for the public and regulators to identify cars officially operating under the GPRTU.

“We will begin branding our vehicles with GPRTU markings. If any branded vehicle is found exploiting passengers, we will identify them and remove them from the union,” Mr. Abulbire added.

This move follows growing public frustration over sudden fare hikes, particularly during rush hours, driven by worsening traffic congestion and a shortage of commercial vehicles in Accra.
