How The Tap & Hop Card Works in a Trotro or Taxi

When you enter a trotro/taxi equipped with a Tap & Hop device, nothing about the normal routine really changes at first.

 

You still board the vehicle the same way. You still choose your seat. The only difference is how you pay.

 

Instead of holding cash or waiting for the driver/mate to give you change, you use your Tap & Hop card. The device in the vehicle is what handles the payment.

 

When you get in, you tap your card on the device inside the vehicle. The system reads your card and records that you’ve started your trip. (Note: Always tap on)

 

During the ride, you don’t need to do anything else. 

When you reach your destination, you tap the same Tap & Hop card again on the device before you get down. This confirms your trip has ended and the correct fare is automatically deducted for the distance you travelled.

 

You don’t need to calculate anything yourself or argue about price or change. The driver receives his money instantly into his mobile money (MoMo) wallet.

 

If your Tap & Hop card balance is low, the system will show it when you try to tap on, so you can top up before you continue your journey. Top-ups can be done through the Tap & Hop app on your phone. (Note: it can take a few hours for the funds to be usable, so it's best to load money on the card in advance).

 

That’s basically how it works. You board, tap on, enjoy the ride, and tap off before you alight.
